Film Diaries: March 2019

Back at it again after a brief hiatus due to a certain film student being assigned a 15-page paper about cardiovascular disease…

Gimme Danger
Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch

Ah, my two favorite people – Jim Jarmusch and Iggy Pop. This documentary gets a lot of mixed reviews, but honestly it worked for me. I could watch a whole movie just about the two Jim’s friendship. They are such intriguing people. Not to mention that the music throughout was, of course, amazing. I was a big fan of the editing and the typography in the opening sequence as well.

Call Me By Your Name
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Written by James Ivory

This film is always worth a rewatch! My Mom (finally) read it over spring break and we watched it together. My roommate says that whenever she wants to be reminded why she wants to be an actor she watches this movie and I can see why. The performances bring the book to life in a vivid, tangible way and you feel this movie right in your heart.

OJ: Made in America
Directed by Ezra Edelman

Watched this again for my Race, Class, and Gender in American film class. A very hard watch but a very important one that speaks to a lot about issues of race, class, and gender in contemporary American society. With five two-hour episodes, the film (series?) is a large undertaking but I encourage you to take the time to watch this if you have not already.

Y Tu Mamá También
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Written by Alfonso and Carlos Cuaron

I loooooooove this movie. I had tried to start it multiple times over the past year but never really got into it until I finally sat down this month. This makes you think that it makes sense that Alfonso Cuaron is one of the most important filmmakers alive today – he makes you care so much about the simplest of stories. You feel that the characters exist beyond the frames of the film.

Y Tu Mamá También is available on Netflix (warning – there is explicit content).

Creature Comforts
Written and directed by Nick Park

This reminded me why I love claymation! Let’s bring it back. Special mention to Maia Kirkpatrick for bringing this short to my attention. It is a gem.
