HOLIDAY MOVIE BIBLE!
With Wham!’s rendition of Last Christmas on repeat in my head all weekend, I think it is time for the first annual Holiday Movie Bible. You’re welcome.
Jojo Rabbit
Written and directed by Taika Waititi
Taika Waititi can literally do no wrong. His Marvel movies are works of art. Of all the movies on this list, I feel like Jojo Rabbit is the most universally accessible for the whole family, and I am excited to see it.
Marriage Story
Written and directed by Noah Baumbach
While it probably won’t be the most uplifting movie to see this holiday season, you really can’t go wrong with Noah Baumbach and I am looking forward to this one. The performances, for one thing, make the heartbreak worth it.
The Lighthouse
Directed by Robert Eggers, Written by Robert and Max Eggers
Come for the cinematography, stay for some killer performances by Edward Cullen and the Green Goblin.
Midway
Directed by Roland Emmerich, Written by Wes Tooke
While this has been getting mediocre reviews, I am going to save the judgement for myself on this one. I think it will be worth a watch. Living up to the other movies surrounding Midway will be difficult, but I respect the attempt. I’m excited.
Waves
Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults
A24! Damn. I have no idea what to expect from this, but the trailer really draws me in and makes me want to know more. It looks intense.
Doctor Sleep
Written and directed by Mike Flanagan
Making this movie feels like an impossible feat given the god-like status The Shining has. Expanding upon Kubrick’s movie feels like a project of insanity. So, in that regard, I applaud everyone involved with this.
Charlie’s Angels
Directed by Elizabeth Banks
I look forward to seeing Elizabeth Banks’s take on the franchise (of which I literally know nothing about). If the trailer tells me anything, the editing looks good?? Kind of?? Well. I’m here for supporting Elizabeth Banks and Kristen Stewart.
Honeyboy
Directed by Alma Har’el, Written by Shia LaBeouf
In recent years, I think Shia LaBeouf has been extremely underrated as an actor (American Honey!! What!!) and I am extremely excited to see the story he has written. Although this looks very sad. Very, very sad. In fact, this holiday movie bible is really taking a turn for the sad.
Ford vs. Ferrari
Directed by James Mangold, Written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller
To me, this is the last movie on this list I would want to see, but I have heard good (?) things (from Rotten Tomatoes, if you trust the tomatometer).
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Directed by JJ Abrams, Written by JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio
If Kylo Ren and Rey don’t get together, I am officially never going to watch another Star Wars movie ever again. I have high hopes for this and am excited for the return of JJ Abrams.
Last Christmas
Directed by Paul Feig, Written by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings
I’m going to see this, and I’m going to like it!!
